On April 8, 2025, Indonesian Finance Minister Indrawati announced that Indonesia will reduce tariffs on steel and mineral products imported from the United States from 5%-10% to 0.5%, and reduce import taxes on electronic products, mobile phones and laptops from any country from 2.5% to 0.5%.
Indonesia's move is aimed at promoting international trade, reducing import costs, stimulating domestic consumption, and enhancing Indonesia's competitiveness in the global supply chain. This is also a concession made by Indonesia in response to the upcoming 32% tariffs imposed by the United States and strengthening trade negotiations with the United States. Indonesia hopes that through these measures, it will ease trade frictions to a certain extent, increase imports from the United States, promote the balanced development of bilateral trade, and attract more investment and technological cooperation from high-tech companies to promote the development of related industries in the country. This policy adjustment has also attracted the attention of neighboring countries, and some countries may consider following up to adjust tax rates to maintain regional competitiveness.
