India has imposed a 12% protective tariff on some steel products since the 21st of this month to curb the surge in imports

On April 21, 2025, the Indian Ministry of Finance issued a notice announcing a temporary 12% protective tariff on some steel products to curb the surge in imports.
India is the world's second largest crude steel producer. The tariff measures will take effect from the date of the announcement and will be valid for 200 days. Last month, the Indian Trade Remedies Directorate General recommended a 12% tariff on some steel products for 200 days to curb the import of cheap steel.
Although Indian officials did not name China in the statement, Reuters pointed out that New Delhi's main target of this tariff measure is China. Some analysts said that in 2024/25, China has become India's second largest source of steel imports after South Korea. In the first eight months of last year, India's imports of finished steel from China reached a record high.
Indian Steel Minister Kumaraswamy said that this move will provide key support to domestic producers, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, protect Indian steel manufacturers from the adverse effects of a surge in imports, and ensure fair competition in the market.
In response, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce clearly pointed out on April 21 that China firmly opposes any party reaching a deal at the expense of China's interests.
